A studio has to do two opposite things at once, and getting them confused is the most common and costly mistake in the field. Isolation keeps sound from leaking out to the street and from bleeding between rooms — that is blocking, achieved with mass and decoupling. Treatment makes the room itself sound accurate for tracking and mixing — that is absorption and diffusion, done inside the room. Why Studios Specify Soundproof Ghana

Serious recording spaces are built on the four acoustic pillars — mass, damping, decoupling and absorption — and on the room-in-room principle: a second structure, floated and decoupled from the base building, so vibration and low frequencies cannot bridge across. This is engineering, not a product you stick to a wall, and it is exactly the ground that import-and-ship foam suppliers do not cover. We design the isolation shell, the resilient floor and ceiling, the door sets and the internal acoustic scheme as one coherent build.

We work to measurable outcomes. Airborne blocking is expressed as an STC target; a control room and vocal booth carry very different requirements from a shared office wall. Internally we tune reverberation (RT60) with a balance of absorption and diffusion so the room is dead enough to track cleanly but alive enough to feel natural — studios typically want RT60 in the region of 0.2–0.4 seconds. Everything is verified rather than assumed.

The Particular Requirements of a Ghanaian Studio

Ghana’s studio scene is growing fast, and most spaces are carved into ordinary concrete buildings on busy streets — which means both keeping music in and keeping traffic, generators and street life out. Low-frequency energy is the hardest part: bass travels through structure, so decoupling and mass matter far more than any single thick layer, since the mass law means doubling one wall’s mass buys only around 5–6 dB.

Climate shapes the material choices. In humid coastal Accra and Tema we specify mineral-wool cores behind moisture-resistant facings and PET/polyester finishes that resist mould, rather than open-cell foam that absorbs humidity and breaks down within a couple of years. Any timber framing or slat detailing uses termite- and moisture-resistant stock — treated, marine-grade or teak — so the build survives the tropical environment. Vibration from a nearby generator or air-conditioning plant is isolated at the source so it never reaches the microphones.

Typical Studio Engagements

The most demanding brief is a full tracking and control-room build in a shared or street-facing building: a decoupled room-in-room shell for isolation, resilient floor and ceiling, engineered door sets, and an internal scheme of bass traps, broadband absorption and diffusion. We measure the leakage and the room response, and verify both against target.

A frequent lighter engagement is the vocal or voiceover booth — a compact, well-isolated and acoustically dead space added to an existing setup for clean dialogue and podcast work. A third pattern is remediation: an existing studio that leaks to neighbours or sounds wrong on playback, where we survey, identify the failing path or the reflection problem, and correct only what is broken. In each case we commit to a measured target and verify before-and-after, never to a blanket promise of total silence.
