Can I do the soundproofing myself with off-the-shelf materials?
Some fixes you can do yourself, like fitting door seals or hanging heavier curtains, and we are happy for you to. The biggest and most common waste of money, though, is treating the wrong path, for example bolting foam to a wall when the noise is coming through the window. A short assessment shows where the sound really travels, so any money you spend, yours or ours, actually works.

How do I stop my neighbour's TV and voices coming through the wall?
That is airborne noise passing through the wall, and the fix is a system, not a single product. We add mass, decouple the surfaces so vibration cannot pass straight through, and seal every flanking gap around sockets, skirting and junctions where sound sneaks past. Foam alone will not do it. After a survey we design the wall build-up to a measured privacy target and verify it before and after.

How do I stop footsteps from the flat above?
Footsteps are impact noise, travelling through the structure itself, so adding mass to the wall does little. The answer is at the floor or ceiling: a decoupled ceiling on isolation hangers, or a floating floor with resilient underlayment above, which breaks the path the thud travels through. We measure the impact level, target a specific improvement and verify it. It is a different problem from airborne neighbour noise.

How do I cut traffic and generator noise coming through my windows?
Windows are usually the weakest point, so they are often the best value to fix first. That echo is a reflection problem inside the room, so it needs acoustic treatment, not soundproofing. What is the difference between soundproofing and foam panels?
They solve opposite problems. Soundproofing blocks sound from passing between rooms, using mass, decoupling and sealing. Foam panels are acoustic treatment: they absorb reflections inside a room to reduce echo, but they add almost no blocking, so your neighbour will still hear you. Putting foam on a wall to stop noise getting through is the most common and costly mistake. Many rooms need both, but for different reasons.

Does egg-crate foam soundproof a room?
No. Egg-crate foam only reduces echo inside a room by absorbing some reflections; it adds almost no blocking between rooms, so it will not stop your neighbour, the generator or the traffic. It is light and thin, and real blocking needs mass, decoupling and sealing. Foam has its place for controlling echo in a studio or on a call, but it is not soundproofing and should never be sold as such.

What is STC and what rating do I need?
STC, or Sound Transmission Class, rates how well a wall, door or floor blocks airborne sound; higher is better. As a rough guide, around 30 means speech is still audible, around 50 is the threshold considered adequately private between dwellings, and around 60 means speech is inaudible. Studios and cinemas aim higher still. Think of it like an SPF rating for noise, a useful guide, not a promise of silence. We design to the STC your goal needs.

What is NRC and how is it different from STC?
NRC, or Noise Reduction Coefficient, is an absorption score from 0 to 1 that tells you how much sound a surface soaks up inside a room, where 1 absorbs almost everything and 0 reflects it back. It is about echo and reverberation within a space, not about blocking noise from reaching your neighbour. You use NRC to make a room sound calmer, and STC to keep sound in or out. Different numbers for different jobs.

What are the four pillars of soundproofing?
Effective soundproofing rests on four pillars: Mass blocks sound, Damping turns vibration into heat and kills resonance, Decoupling breaks the physical path so vibration cannot pass straight through, and Absorption cleans up sound inside the room. Why not just add one thick, heavy layer to block the noise?
Because of the mass law: with a single solid wall, every doubling of mass buys only about five to six decibels, so making one layer thicker gives diminishing returns for a lot of weight and cost. The heavy lifting comes from decoupling and damping, separating two masses with an air gap and adding a viscoelastic layer between rigid boards. That is why a well-designed wall beats a merely thick one.

What are flanking paths and why do they matter?
Flanking is sound taking a route around your barrier rather than through it, along shared floors and ceilings, through ducts, gaps, door undercuts or back-to-back electrical sockets. A perfectly built wall means nothing if sound flows around it, and even a one per cent gap can cost around ten decibels. Sealing and treating these hidden paths is essential, which is why our survey traces every route before we design.

Low bass is the hardest sound to block, because long wavelengths carry a lot of energy and pass easily through light structures. It is not impossible, but it demands the full toolkit: substantial mass, decoupling to break the path and damping to kill resonance, and it costs more than treating everyday speech or traffic. It can, because good soundproofing depends on sealing gaps, and the same gaps often let air move.
