If you read only one of these guides, read this one. The most common — and most expensive — mistake customers make is confusing soundproofing with acoustic treatment. They sound like the same thing, and shops sell them side by side, but they solve opposite problems. Buy the wrong one and you will spend real money and fix nothing, then conclude that “soundproofing doesn’t work.” It does. You bought treatment.
Two Opposite Jobs
Here is the distinction in one line:
- Soundproofing (blocking) stops sound getting in or out of a room — it’s about the neighbours, the street, the generator, the studio leaking to the road.
- Acoustic treatment controls how a room sounds inside — it’s about echo, clarity and comfort within the space.
One is about the boundary between your room and the world; the other is about the experience inside your four walls. They use different materials, target different measurements, and cost different amounts. A room can need one, the other, or both — but you must know which.
The Foam Trap
Nothing illustrates the confusion better than acoustic foam. Someone is kept awake by a neighbour, sees studio foam online, covers a wall in it, and is baffled when they can still hear everything. Here’s why: foam is treatment, not soundproofing. It’s a lightweight, porous absorber — it soaks up echo inside the room, but it has almost no mass, so it does virtually nothing to block sound passing through the wall to the neighbour. A sponge on the wall never sealed the lid on the pot.
Egg-crate foam is the classic example: it will make your own voice sound tighter and cleaner in the room, which feels like progress, but the person next door hears no difference at all. If your problem is the neighbours, foam is the wrong purchase — full stop. This is covered further in Absorption, Blocking and Diffusion.
When You Need Soundproofing (Blocking)
Reach for soundproofing when the problem crosses a boundary:
- A generator, AC unit or traffic keeping you awake
- A neighbour’s TV, music or voices through the wall
- Footsteps from the flat above
- A home cinema, studio or venue that mustn’t disturb the rest of the building or the street
- A clinic, boardroom or HR office where conversations must stay private
Blocking is achieved with mass, damping, decoupling and sealing, and it’s measured by STC (airborne) and IIC (impact) — see STC, IIC and NRC Explained. Crucially, it only works if the flanking paths are sealed too.
When You Need Acoustic Treatment
Reach for treatment when the room itself is the problem — it’s uncomfortable, echoey or hard to hear in, even though no neighbour is involved:
- A restaurant so loud that diners can’t converse
- A meeting room where video calls sound hollow and tiring
- An open-plan office where every conversation carries
- A church or hall where the sermon is unintelligible over the echo
- A home studio that needs a clean, controlled sound to record in
Treatment is absorption (and a little diffusion), measured by NRC and by reverberation time, RT60 — see RT60 and Reverberation Explained. This is the whole of our acoustic treatment and echo control. It makes a room sound better; it does not make it quieter to the neighbours.
The Cases That Need Both
Plenty of real projects need both jobs done together, and that’s where a survey earns its keep. A home cinema must be blocked so it doesn’t shake the house and treated so dialogue is crisp. A recording studio must be isolated from the street and internally controlled to record cleanly. A restaurant in a mixed-use building may need treatment for the diners’ comfort and blocking so the flats above aren’t disturbed. Done together in the right order — usually block first, then treat the finished shell — they deliver a room that’s both quiet to the outside and pleasant on the inside. The Honest Frame
Neither job promises silence or a perfect room — both deliver a measured target, verified before and after: a blocking figure in decibels or STC, and a treatment figure in reverberation time. The single most valuable thing a survey does is tell you which of these two you actually need, so you never again pay for a sponge when what you needed was a lid.
